Avocado Oil: the next big thing?

It costs twice as much as extra virgin olive oil and six times more than some seed oils but is it really any healthier?

Blood Fats: a small study said it can reduce cholesterol and triglycerides but on closer inspection of the research, it appears olive oil and canola oil do an equally good job.

Eye Health: broccoli, kale, spinach, and courgette do an equally good job at a fraction of the price (100g spinach gives you your daily intake of the protective antioxidant lutein).

Osteoarthritis (the most common form of arthritis): currently no evidence that avocado oil consumed in dietary amounts reduces symptoms.

High Blood Pressure: no human evidence yet but a rodent trial looked promising. We do have human evidence that olive oil consumed in healthy amounts can reduce high blood pressure.

The bottom line: avocado oil is a healthy oil as part of a varied and diverse diet, but it’s no healthier than olive oil. Based on the strongest and most robust evidence, use extra virgin olive oil for dressings, and olive oil or high-oleic sunflower oil for cooking
